Introduction:
Big Lin and Little Lin live alone as poor orphans. Big Lin envies the rich and wishes he could become a millionaire, while Little Lin hopes to always earn a living from work. One day in the forest, they are attacked and driven apart for the first time in their lives, they have very different fates. Big Lin is adopted by a very rich family and lives the life of a prince, while Little Lin goes to work in a factory where he frees the other child workers in a labor revolt. He then works for a man who takes him in and eventually becomes a train conductor. Big Lin, now obese and married to a princess sees his brother again on his train, but they don't recognize each other. Disaster strikes and Little Lin wants to divert the train from its route to bring relief to victims, but Big Lin wants to protect his wife's property. The train crashes, and Big Lin ends up stranded on an island where he chooses luxury over life.
Big Lin and Little Lin has unusual ideas, hyperbole, bold imagination, twists and turns, which makes for a highly interesting read. Its biting critique of the love of money, expressed in humorous and lively language, is never didactic nor heavy handed
