Introduction:
She Once Was a True Love of Mine is a story of regret and redemption as told through the eyes of 15-year-old An Zhiqing. When she is sent away to live with her grandmother, An Zhiqing has time to reflect on her friendship with Fanfan, a girl whose disappearance has left An Zhiqing wondering what she could have done to save her.
Something is deeply troubling 15-year-old An Zhiqing. After being sent to live with her grandmother, she can't help but dwell on the disappearance of her friend, Fanfan. Fanfan treasured An Zhiqing's friendship, and would often go out of her way to spend time with her at school. Unfortunately, the more An Zhiqing thinks about it, the more she realizes that she didn't treat Fanfan as a true friend at all. After Fanfan disappears, An Zhiqing reads a very revealing letter. In it, Fanfan explains that she was under constant abuse from her family, and her friendship with An Zhiqing was the only happiness in her life. When she felt An Zhiqing no longer wanted to be her friend, she was overcome with despair. Racked with guilt and sadness, An Zhiqing decides to honor Fanfan by helping others, and living a life that would bring Fanfan joy.
